Cliffdale Primary School

Forest School

Forest School offers pupils an educational experience in a ‘wild woodland’ setting, with safe, experiential learning about the world around them and how to care for it. The pupils have regular opportunities to achieve, develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences.

This learning environment offers increased opportunities to develop problem solving, critical thinking and teamwork skills whilst increasing their ability to deal with their own and others emotions.

Pupils develop skills for simple conservation, creating shelters, making fires and cooking. Alongside this pupils will learn about seasonal changes and there will be time for games and fun!

Creech Woods and 100 Acre Woods are used to help pupils to:

  • Increase their confidence in outdoor settings
  • Use the setting for imaginative play
  • Assess and manage risks to themselves and others
  • Develop their communication and language skills
  • Investigate how the natural world affects them
  • Push themselves outside their comfort zones
  • Have a sense of achievement and success.

Forest School 2020

Out in the forest again and the children have been thrilled to get back outside! We have had to readjust some of our golden rules to ensure social distancing from the public and they have been amazing, making staff really proud.
The children have been learning about seasonal changes and observing natural objects. Using lanyards with pictures they identified pine cones, fern, sweet chestnut and holly leaves. They looked really closely, remembering the names and Jack found a beautiful toadstool! He was very sensible and didn’t touch it and called his friends to see it too. Zakk, Yameen and Dexter all found holly; while Olek found fern and Charlie compared pine cones with Maisie! Charlie was fascinated by an open sweet chestnut shell and braved the spikes to have a closer look!
Linked with their topic ‘Incredible me’ they have been reflecting on how good their forest skills, like climbing and balancing are and what they would like to do even better. George, Benyamin, Patrick and Finley all challenged themselves to climb higher than ever before!
