Why we teach Maths
We want all of our children to be able to solve problems and understand numbers. It is important that our children understand key mathematical concepts such as time, to help them make sense of the world around them. By the time children leave Cliffdale they will have developed functional mathematical skills so they can count, recognise and use numbers and apply these skills in different situations. We want the children to be confident to take risks and try to solve problems.
We will provide relevant and motivating tasks that will stimulate interest and enthusiasm. Our tasks will be challenging but manageable and will be relevant to the children’s lives.
It is our intent that all children, regardless of their starting point, will reach their EHCP achievement targets.
How we teach Maths
All children have access to daily maths teaching, through discreet maths sessions and songs or games, as well as teaching pre-requisite skills.
For maths, our long-term planning follows the National Curriculum. NC informs our long-term map which is then broken down still further to create a sequence of learning that is appropriate to each child. Rainbow plans and daily lessons are adapted to the pupil’s own way of learning using their own learning processes supported by their EHCP targets.
We follow a multi-sensory approach using practical activities/stories/songs and link these to concrete skills.
We will have a strong emphasis on pupil engagement and motivation and will include opportunities for outdoor learning and real-life experiences.
Assessment will be regular through practical tasks and will be recorded on Reports/ Earwig/key skills/annual reviews/EHCPs. Pupils will be made aware of their targets and will take ownership of their learning where appropriate
Maths achievements will be celebrated immediately and linked to our Cliffdale values of independence, communication engagement and resilience. Pupils will be made aware of their successes in order to progress further.
There will be opportunities to investigate, explore, generalise and problem solve:
- Number – place value
- Money
- Capacity/measurement/Weight
- Time including now/next, what happens on different days as well as clock times, anticipation
- Posting, sorting,
- Language of maths
- Left to right movements
- Sensory experiences
What difference does this make to the children
- Objectives will be challenging yet achievable. This will promote self-esteem and enable all pupils to achieve success.
- Pupils’ own ways of learning and remembering things will be emphasised.
- Children will be able to use maths in everyday life and learning in other subjects. They will not be afraid to try to solve problems. It will have an impact on self-esteem as they will not afraid make mistakes try solving problems.
- Our children will be able to generalise these skills in other areas eg trips outside school, at home etc.
