Values

Why we teach Science

Science enables our children to explore and investigate their learning environment and the world around them. Learning is child-led, which enables high levels of engagement within the subject.

The teaching of science encourages our children to communicate and interact with each other through exciting activities. These activities include first-hand experiences that encourage exploration, problem solving, experimentation, prediction, observation, decision making and discussion.

How we teach this

We provide amazing opportunities for our children to learn scientific concepts through a multi-sensory approach. Through a range of topics across the school, children learn about animals, including humans, living things and their habitats, materials and their properties as well as plants.

  • Attention Autism is used to demonstrate concepts and ideas, inspiring awe and wonder
  • Curiosity Boxes are used to encourage exploration and engagement
  • Continuous Provision and Sensory play- through tuff trays to promote exploration, investigation and problem solving
  • Workshops provided by external companies e.g. The Travelling Zoo providing a ‘hook’ for our Topic Launch Days
  • STEM week in the Spring term
